I want my work to appear wherever advertising is seen, balancing the familiar call to commercial action with a seriously humorous call to creative action. Coming Soon!! Art Replaces Advertising appropriates movie screen advertising space to establish a moment of personal connection with a large public audience. The project's title refers to the anticipation of exciting things to come and the power of creative action to connect us to our own personal journeys. Coming Soon makes use of the recurring themes that make movies so compelling, and sums up the human drama in three vignettes of high stakes, adventure and reward. I cast myself as the main character in these images in an attempt to make these universal themes personal - reminding myself and others to connect to the drama of our own lives. I want to reach the largest audience possible with my work, which has evolved into a blend of art, performance and media advertising. Coming Soon! will reach a larger audience than any of my previous public projects. I'm thrilled at the prospect of seeing my images on movie theater screens. It's a way of participating the cultural fantasy of becoming a media star, but more seriously, it's a way to balance the commercial pressures of our of our daily experience with a moment of creative connection. In this project as in all my work, I share my thoughts with the public and invite everyone to get in touch with me to take part in the conversation. e-mail me with comments, questions or suggestions this project is supported in part by a Connecticut State University Research Grant and a Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism Fellowship |
